Ukaegbu Reaffirms Commitment to Safe and Affordable Transportation in Abia

The Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu, has reaffirmed the Abia State Government’s commitment to building a safe, affordable, and well-organized transport system for residents of the state.

Dr. Ukaegbu made this known during a press briefing held at the newly completed Umuahia Bus Terminal, where he highlighted the ministry’s recent activities and ongoing efforts to improve public transportation services across the state.

According to him, the primary responsibility of the Ministry of Transportation is to regulate the transport sector and ensure that residents have access to safe, reliable, and affordable transportation. He added that the ministry remains focused on improving the movement of people and goods while maintaining safety and order on the roads.

Speaking on the electric bus initiative, the Commissioner explained that the modern buses were introduced in December to enhance public transportation and provide residents with a more comfortable travel experience. He noted that the buses operated free of charge from December until April 29 to enable residents familiarize themselves with the system during the festive period.

He further disclosed that from March 1, the service transitioned from free rides to a paid system with affordable fares, while an electronic ticketing system was introduced to simplify payment.

Under the system, passengers are required to obtain the Abia Collect Card through their ABSIN registration at no cost. After obtaining the card, commuters are expected to load funds onto it before boarding the buses. He added that ministry staff have been deployed to various locations to assist passengers and ensure a seamless process.

Describing the electric buses as modern and comfortable, Dr. Ukaegbu said they are equipped with air conditioners, CCTV cameras for security, television screens for entertainment, and charging ports for mobile phones.

“At the moment, we already have 20 buses on the road, and another 20 will be added soon, followed by 30 more. Before the end of the year, we expect about 100 buses across the state,” he said.

The Commissioner also revealed that the ministry is reforming agencies under its supervision, including ABSIN, ABIA Line, and ABROTA, with the aim of improving efficiency and service delivery.

On the airport project, Dr. Ukaegbu stated that construction work is ongoing and that most affected residents have already been compensated, while compensation payments are still continuing. He noted that the project forms part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen the state’s transportation infrastructure.

Speaking on rail development, the Commissioner disclosed that the state government is collaborating with the Nigerian Railway Corporation to revive rail transportation. According to him, meetings have already been held to strengthen the partnership and improve transportation and economic activities within the state.

He also spoke about the Smart Traffic Management System, noting that the government is introducing new technology to improve traffic flow, road management, and public safety. He said the initiative is aimed at reducing traffic congestion and making movement easier in major cities across the state.

On infrastructure development, Dr. Ukaegbu announced that the Umuahia Bus Terminal has been completed and is already operational, while construction work is ongoing at the Aba Bus Terminal.

He explained that the terminals are designed to serve as central hubs where passengers can conveniently access buses, tricycles, and minibuses, thereby reducing the use of scattered motor parks across the state.

According to him, operations at the Umuahia Bus Terminal commenced on the 19th with the Green Bus service, while other transport operators are expected to fully move into the terminal by the 25th of the month.

“We have made all necessary arrangements to ensure the smooth running of this terminal,” he added.

Dr. Ukaegbu further disclosed that plans are underway for a Deep Sea Port project. He said consultants have already been engaged to conduct feasibility studies for the project, which is expected to boost economic activities, create jobs, and attract investments to the state.

The Commissioner was accompanied at the briefing by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Barr. Awajane Olanma Ngozi; the Director-General of the National Orientation Commission, Hon. Ure Abazie; and the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Transportation, Meregini Lucky.
