Abia State Government has announced a mandatory five-day orientation programme for 4,074 newly recruited teachers as part of efforts to strengthen teaching standards and improve learning outcomes across public schools.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists at Government House, Umuahia, on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Prince Kanu said the orientation would take place from September 7 to 12 at Dr Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, and Federal Government Girls’ College, Umuahia.
According to the Commissioner, the newly recruited teachers would select their preferred training venue through the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education’s portal.
He said the programme would acquaint the teachers with the responsibilities and expectations of public and civil service, as well as the vision and strategic direction of education under the Otti led administration.
Prince Kanu added that the participants would also be trained in modern learner-centred teaching methods, digital literacy, classroom technology, data-driven teaching tools, STEM methodologies and vocational alignment.
He added that experts in the various fields would serve as resource persons during the training.
