The Secretary to the Akwa Ibom State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah, has said that the large number of people who attended the All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representatives primary election shows that Governor Umo Eno is performing well.
Uwah, who is also the political leader of Uyo Local Government Area, spoke on Saturday at St. Michael’s Primary School, Ward 6, Uyo, during the APC primary election. At the event, the current House of Representatives member, Mark Esset, emerged as the party’s consensus candidate.
He praised the APC for using the direct primary system, saying it strengthens democracy and allows all party members, including women, to freely support the candidate of their choice.
Uwah also thanked party members for coming out in large numbers and for behaving peacefully during the exercise. He urged them to continue supporting the party and its candidates.
According to him, “This is a direct primary election where members openly stand behind the candidate they support. I prefer this method because it allows everyone to participate instead of leaving decisions to a few delegates in a room or hotel.”
He added that people in his area are fully supporting Mark Esset because he is popular and has the backing of the people.
“That is why, even after agreeing on a consensus candidate, members still came out to show their support publicly,” he said.
Uwah also called on residents to continue supporting Governor Umo Eno, saying the peaceful conduct of the primary election is proof that the state is enjoying peace and good leadership.
Speaking on the exercise, the Chairman of Ward 6 in Uyo Local Government Area, Mr. Inibehe Emmanuel, described the primary election as peaceful and successful.
He said over 6,000 registered APC members in the ward participated in the exercise to support Mark Esset’s return to the National Assembly.
“Today’s exercise was peaceful and free of violence. It shows the good leadership of our governor,” Emmanuel said.
At the end of the election, Mark Esset received a total of 5,615 votes, according to the returning officer, Mr. Jude Oliver.
Several government officials and party leaders also attended the exercise, including Dr. Mrs. Inemesit Uwah, wife of the SSG; Sir Charles Udoh, Managing Director of Ibom Hotels; Mr. Ime Uwah, Sole Administrator of Ibom Paint Industry; Mr. David Sergeant, Senior Special Assistant on Entertainment; and other aides and party elders.
