The two-day 3×3 Basketball Championship organized by the Abia State Basketball Association came to a thrilling and successful conclusion, with Basket Guardians and Star Girls emerging champions in the male and female categories respectively.
The championship, which was held at the Umuahia Township Stadium indoor sports hall, brought together some of the finest basketball talents across the state and provided fans with two days of exciting, competitive, and entertaining action.
A total of 12 teams battled for honours in the male category. The participating teams included Apex, Court Kings, Wise Men, Lion Heart Hoopers, Phantom, Umudike Hoopers, Velocity Buckets, Basket Guardians, Todre, Threat Team, Under Dogs, and Umudike Storm. Each team displayed remarkable determination, skill, teamwork, and resilience throughout the tournament, making the competition highly competitive from start to finish.
The female category also produced impressive performances, as The Elites, Hoop Valkyries, and Star Girls competed fiercely for the top prize. The games showcased the growing strength and potential of women’s basketball in Abia State, with the players thrilling spectators with their energy, passion, and talent on the court.
After two days of intense basketball action, Basket Guardians emerged champions in the male category after an outstanding performance throughout the tournament. Lion Heart Hoopers finished in second place, while Umudike Hoopers secured third position.
In the female category, Star Girls proved their dominance by clinching the championship title, while The Elites and Hoop Valkyries finished in second and third positions respectively.
Speaking at the end of the championship, the Chairman of the Abia State Basketball Association, Mr. Victor Ifeanyi Okoro, expressed satisfaction with the quality of competition, the level of organization, and the impressive performances displayed by the participating teams. He stated that the tournament represents only the beginning of bigger plans and initiatives aimed at developing basketball in Abia State.
Mr. Okoro further assured players, coaches, and basketball enthusiasts that the association remains committed to discovering and nurturing young talents while creating more opportunities for athletes in the state to compete and excel at higher levels.
A major highlight of the championship was the donation of jerseys to participating teams, a gesture aimed at supporting and encouraging the clubs as they continue to develop the game at the grassroots level.
