Nigeria, UK Reaffirm Partnership on Women, Peace, Security

Nigeria has welcomed the United Kingdom’s renewed commitment to advancing the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda, describing the development as a major boost to ongoing efforts to strengthen women’s participation in peacebuilding and national security.

The renewed commitment was reaffirmed during the Nigeria–UK Defence and Security Forum, where the UK Government, through its Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), pledged continued support for the implementation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 in Nigeria.

The UK also reiterated its commitment to promoting the meaningful involvement of women in conflict prevention, mediation, stabilization, peacebuilding and post-conflict recovery.

The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development said the UK’s SPRING Programme has continued to play a vital role in supporting inclusive peace and security initiatives, strengthening institutions and empowering women as key contributors to resilient communities and sustainable peace.

Speaking on the renewed partnership, the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, described the UK’s commitment as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s implementation of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda.

She stressed that the effective implementation of UNSCR 1325 remains critical to ensuring that women are not only protected during conflicts but are also empowered to serve as leaders, negotiators and decision-makers in peace and security processes.

Sulaiman-Ibrahim reaffirmed the commitment of the Federal Government, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to deepening collaboration with international partners in promoting inclusive governance, strengthening institutional frameworks and advancing sustainable peace through the active participation of women at all levels.

The ministry expressed confidence that its strategic partnership with the United Kingdom would further accelerate the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, delivering long-term benefits for women, families, communities and the country.
