Nigeria to Lead Key Deliberations at ECOWAS Mid-Year Summit

Nigeria’s Honourable Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, has departed for Freetown, Sierra Leone, to lead the Nigerian delegation to the 2026 Mid-Year Coordination Summit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The announcement was contained in a statement signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja, on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.

The high-level summit will convene Heads of State and Government, Ministers, senior government officials, and representatives of regional institutions to review the implementation of ECOWAS programmes and initiatives aimed at deepening regional integration, promoting economic cooperation, strengthening peace and security, and advancing sustainable development across West Africa.

As part of Nigeria’s participation, Ambassador Enikanolaiye will represent the country at the 56th Session of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council at the Ministerial Level on July 15, 2026. He will also lead the Nigerian delegation to the 96th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers, scheduled for July 16–17, 2026.

During the summit, the Minister is expected to engage in a series of high-level consultations focused on enhancing regional cooperation, addressing emerging political, security and economic challenges, and accelerating the implementation of ECOWAS integration programmes.

Nigeria’s participation underscores the country’s longstanding commitment to the ideals and objectives of ECOWAS. The Federal Government reaffirmed its resolve to continue playing a leading role in promoting peace, democracy, good governance, economic integration and sustainable development throughout the West African sub-region.

The 2026 ECOWAS Mid-Year Coordination Summit is expected to provide Member States with an opportunity to assess progress on key regional priorities, strengthen collaboration among ECOWAS institutions, and chart a unified path toward a more peaceful, secure and prosperous West Africa.
