Federal Government has called for stronger collaboration among citizens, the media, civil society organisations, and security agencies to combat terrorism and violent extremism across the country.
Speaking at a national press briefing in Abuja, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, unveiled the #UniteAgainstTerror campaign, describing terrorism as a common threat that requires a united national response.
According to the Minister, terrorism has no ethnic, religious, or political identity and must be confronted collectively by all Nigerians.
Idris reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to securing the release of schoolchildren and teachers recently abducted in separate attacks in Oyo and Borno states, assuring that security agencies have intensified intelligence gathering, surveillance, and rescue operations.
Highlighting recent security successes, he said troops under Operation Hadin Kai and other security formations have eliminated dozens of terrorists, dismantled criminal camps, disrupted kidnapping networks, and strengthened the protection of critical national assets across several regions of the country.
The Minister noted that improved inter-agency cooperation, intelligence sharing, advanced surveillance technologies, and stronger international partnerships are contributing to progress in Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts.
He also cited significant judicial achievements, including convictions secured against perpetrators of the 2022 attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State. He added that hundreds of terrorism suspects are currently undergoing trial as part of one of the largest terrorism prosecution exercises in the nation’s history.
Calling on the media to report responsibly, Idris urged journalists to avoid unintentionally amplifying terrorist propaganda while ensuring the public remains accurately informed.
He further encouraged citizens to remain vigilant, provide credible information to security agencies, and reject divisive narratives capable of undermining national unity.
The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property, expressing confidence that Nigeria would ultimately overcome the threat of terrorism through collective resolve and sustained security operations.
