Abia Opens 2026 Youth Leadership Bootcamp for 1,000 Young Leaders
The Abia State Government has commenced the 2026 Abia State Leadership Academy Youth Leadership Bootcamp, bringing together 1,000 selected youths from across the state for an intensive one-week leadership and capacity-building programme aimed at producing ethical leaders, innovators and changemakers.
The bootcamp was officially declared open at Government College, Umuahia, by the Deputy Governor, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, who represented Governor Dr. Alex Otti.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Emetu said the programme underscores the administration’s commitment to investing in the next generation of leaders through the Abia State Leadership Academy, a strategic institution established to equip young people with leadership values, ethics and practical skills for national development.
He disclosed that the academy received over 7,000 applications for the 2026 edition of the programme, but only 1,000 participants were selected after a rigorous process involving verification, interviews and computer-based tests.
According to the Governor’s representative, the overwhelming number of applications reflects the confidence young people have in the present administration and its youth development initiatives.
“This year’s programme demonstrates the confidence young people have in this administration. Through this academy, government is investing in the character, competence and leadership capacity of the next generation,” he said.
Emetu also announced a strategic partnership between the Abia State Leadership Academy and the Enterprise Development Centre (EDC) of Pan-Atlantic University, noting that participants would receive world-class leadership training, mentorship and entrepreneurial development from experienced facilitators.
In his welcome address, the President of the Abia State Leadership Academy, Prof. Kenneth Kalu, urged participants to see themselves as partners in building a better Abia and Nigeria. He said the true success of the bootcamp would be measured by the impact participants make in their communities after completing the programme.
Prof. Kalu explained that the academy’s philosophy is to encourage participants to “think, reflect and become” transformational leaders capable of driving sustainable development.
Also speaking, Commissioner I of the Abia State Civil Service Commission, Mrs. Ifeoma Agu, who represented the Chairman of the Commission and Programme Facilitator, Pastor Eno Jerry Eze, PhD, encouraged participants to embrace the opportunity to develop leadership values, civic responsibility and excellence. She urged them to apply the knowledge acquired during the training to compete favourably with their peers across the world.
Representing the Executive Director of the Enterprise Development Centre, Dr. Uchenna Egbulam said the partnership with the academy demonstrates a shared commitment to raising ethical leaders and entrepreneurs who will contribute meaningfully to societal development.
He explained that the bootcamp curriculum is built around four key pillars—leadership and service, enterprise, impact and innovation—while promoting critical thinking, problem-solving and lifelong learning.
Speaking on behalf of the participants, Mr. Obiora Chukwuemere commended Governor Otti for providing a conducive learning environment, including accommodation, feeding and training facilities. He noted that the programme had already begun instilling values such as integrity, discipline, empathy, innovation and civic responsibility.
Another participant, Miss Ogbonna Treasure, also expressed gratitude to the Governor, the Enterprise Development Centre and the leadership of the academy for creating an opportunity for Abia youths to develop into transformational leaders. She assured that participants would maximise the opportunity and justify the confidence reposed in them.
