The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, has called on political leaders across Nigeria to embrace patriotism, tolerance and issue-based politics as the country gradually prepares for another electoral cycle.
Speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the 80th birthday celebration of former Governor of Plateau State and former Governor of old Benue State, Jonah David Jang, held in Jos last ,Friday, Senator Usman said Nigeria’s progress would depend largely on the willingness of political leaders to place national interest above personal ambition and partisan considerations.
She stressed that while political competition remains a vital pillar of democracy, it must never descend into bitterness, hatred or actions capable of undermining the country’s unity and democratic institutions.
“The next election should not be a battle against fellow Nigerians. It should be a contest of ideas, competence and character. When elections are over, we must all return to the same Nigeria. That is why patriotism must always be greater than politics,” she said.
Senator Usman urged politicians to promote unity rather than division, saying Nigerians deserve leaders who inspire hope, strengthen democratic values and build bridges across political, ethnic and religious divides.
“Our political parties may be different, but our country is one. We owe future generations the responsibility of conducting politics without destroying the bonds that hold our nation together,” she added.
The Labour Party National Chairman also called for greater civility in the nation’s political space, urging political actors and their supporters to reject inflammatory rhetoric and embrace mutual respect.
According to her, history ultimately honours leaders who build strong institutions, protect democracy and place the country’s interests above personal or political gains.
She further maintained that democracy thrives where there is tolerance, peaceful dialogue and respect for differing opinions, noting that political disagreements should strengthen democratic governance rather than weaken national unity.
Reflecting on the significance of Senator Jang’s 80th birthday, Usman described the elder statesman as a patriot whose decades of service in both the military and democratic governance have left an enduring legacy in Nigeria.
She noted that Jang’s distinguished career, first as a military officer and later as Governor of Plateau State and Senator of the Federal Republic, exemplifies discipline, courage, sacrifice and unwavering commitment to national service.
“At 80, Senator Jonah Jang represents a generation of leaders whose lives remind us that public office is ultimately about service, honour and legacy. We celebrate not only his longevity but also his enduring contributions to nation-building,” she said.
Senator Usman concluded by praying for God’s continued blessings upon the former governor, wishing him good health, renewed strength and many more years of impactful service to the nation.
