Emetu Commends Ohuhu Youths’ Development Drive, Pledges Support for Youth Day Celebration.
The Deputy Governor of Abia State, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, has applauded the Ohuhu Welfare Union Youth Wing for its commitment to agriculture, youth empowerment and community development, describing the group as strategic partners in the progress of Abia State.
Speaking while receiving members of the youth body at his office in Government House, Umuahia, Emetu commended their leadership, discipline and developmental initiatives, particularly their large-scale cassava farming project and campaign against drug abuse and cultism.
The Deputy Governor expressed appreciation to the youths for their support during the 2023 general elections, noting that their commitment contributed significantly to the emergence of the present administration led by Governor Alex Otti.
He said the current administration has opened a new chapter for Abia State and assured the delegation that government would continue to partner with responsible youth organisations that promote peace, productivity and community development.
Emetu stressed the importance of youth participation in governance, saying the future of every society depends largely on the quality of its young people.
According to him, youths have the responsibility of shaping their communities positively through constructive engagement rather than social vices.
He also advised political stakeholders to attach greater importance to national elections, explaining that victory at the national level strengthens a political party’s capacity to attract greater developmental benefits for the people.
The Deputy Governor advocated closer collaboration among elected representatives at the federal and state levels to ensure equitable distribution of projects across communities and eliminate unnecessary duplication of development projects.
Responding to the delegation’s invitation to the forthcoming Ohuhu Youth Day scheduled for August 22, Emetu said government support for communities was not dependent on receiving awards, adding that public service should always be driven by the desire to improve the lives of the people.
Earlier, President of the Ohuhu Welfare Union Youth Wing, Mr. Ihenaocha Uchenna, congratulated Emetu on his emergence as Deputy Governor, describing him as a source of inspiration and hope for young people across Abia State.
He commended Governor Alex Otti for appointing a youthful Deputy Governor, saying the decision had reinforced confidence among youths that leadership opportunities are increasingly open to younger generations.
Uchenna praised the achievements of the present administration, noting that the developmental projects across the state were visible and widely appreciated by residents.
He informed the Deputy Governor that the Ohuhu Youth Day, held every four years, serves as a platform to promote the cultural heritage of Ohuhu people and celebrate youth excellence.
He formally invited Emetu to attend the August 22 event, where the union plans to honour him with an award in recognition of his contributions to the development of Abia State.
Highlighting the activities of the youth wing, Uchenna disclosed that members collectively cultivate more than 50 plots of cassava farmland using improved stems while providing practical agricultural training for young people in collaboration with experts.
He added that the organisation has also been conducting anti-drug abuse and anti-cultism sensitisation campaigns in secondary schools across Ohuhu in partnership with the National Orientation Agency (NOA), in line with the developmental agenda of the Abia State Government.
In a vote of thanks, Mr. Nkwachukwu Ogwugbu expressed gratitude to the Deputy Governor for granting the delegation audience, describing the meeting as a demonstration of the administration’s commitment to youth inclusion and participatory governance.
