A political activist, John Ade, has identified worsening economic hardship and insecurity as the most pressing challenges confronting Nigerians, urging government at all levels to take urgent and decisive steps to address the situation.
Speaking with reporters in Port Harcourt, Ade expressed concern over the increasing cases of violent attacks, kidnappings and killings across the country, describing the security situation as a major obstacle to national development and economic growth.
According to him, many communities continue to live in fear as criminal groups operate in various parts of the country, while citizens increasingly struggle to secure their livelihoods and provide for their families.
He called on the Federal Government to adopt more proactive measures to safeguard lives and property, stressing that security remains the foundation upon which economic progress and social stability are built.
Ade argued that persistent insecurity has negatively affected agricultural production and business activities, as many farmers and entrepreneurs are unable to operate freely due to fears of abduction, attacks and other criminal activities.
He noted that the situation has contributed to rising poverty levels, food shortages and economic difficulties, particularly among vulnerable households.
The activist further lamented what he described as the erosion of trust within communities, where criminal activities have created suspicion and fear among residents.
He advocated greater support for community-based security initiatives, suggesting that properly regulated local vigilante groups could complement existing security agencies in tackling crime, especially in rural areas and forests where criminal elements often operate.
Ade also decried reports of attacks on communities and places of worship, as well as incidents of kidnapping and violence against innocent citizens, calling for stronger action by security agencies to bring perpetrators to justice.
On the economic front, he expressed concern over the rising cost of living and the growing hardship faced by many Nigerians, noting that numerous families struggle daily to meet basic needs, including access to food and other essentials.
He urged political leaders to focus on addressing the immediate concerns of citizens, particularly issues relating to insecurity, hunger and poverty, rather than concentrating on future electoral contests.
Similarly, another commentator, Iyala Prince, described the current economic situation as deeply troubling, saying many Nigerians are finding it increasingly difficult to cope with rising living costs.
He called on the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prioritise measures aimed at improving security and alleviating economic hardship.
Prince maintained that tackling insecurity and creating economic opportunities should remain at the forefront of government efforts, as these issues directly affect the welfare and wellbeing of millions of Nigerians.
The commentators agreed that sustainable solutions to insecurity and economic hardship would require coordinated action, effective policies and a commitment to improving the living conditions of citizens across the country.
