Abia Police to Mark International Youth Day with Walkathon, Police–Youth Dialogue.
The Abia State Police Command will on Thursday, August 20, 2026, join the rest of the world in commemorating International Youth Day with activities aimed at strengthening youth engagement, community policing and security awareness across the state.
The programme, being held under the National Youth and Security Initiative and themed “Different Context, Common Aspirations,” is in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police to promote meaningful engagement between young people and law enforcement agencies.
According to the Command, activities will commence with a walkathon at 7:30 a.m. from Okpara Square, Umuahia. The walk is designed to promote unity and security awareness while encouraging greater youth participation in community policing initiatives.
The main event will hold at 2:00 p.m. at the Police Officers’ Mess, opposite Damgrete Hotel, Umuahia. A major highlight of the programme will be the launch of the National Campaign Against Political and Digital Thuggery, with the theme, “My Future is Greater than Political and Digital Thuggery.”
The event will also feature a moderated Police–Youth Dialogue Session, providing an opportunity for young people and law enforcement personnel to discuss security challenges, build mutual trust and explore collaborative approaches to maintaining peace and public safety.
The Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Wilfred Olutunbo Afolabi, urged youths and other relevant stakeholders to participate actively in the programme, describing it as an important platform for constructive dialogue and partnership in building a safer society.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring greater youth inclusion in security discourse and pledged to sustain efforts towards promoting peace, security and sustainable development across Abia State.
