Ahead of the forthcoming Local Government elections in Abia State billed to hold on 18th December 2020, the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) has flagged off its electioneering campaign.
The event held in Umuahia, was not devoid of the usual activities of a gathering of such nature with various groups carrying posters of their preferred candidates which kept the arena alive with songs and eulogies of their candidates.
The occasion also featured the official handover of PDP flags to those who will campaign as flagbearers in the 17 Local Government Areas of the state.
Speaking at the event, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu noted the flag off campaign, marks the beginning of electioneering period for the candidates and urged them to put in their best so as to emerge victorious.
The Governor stated that the various projects built by the PDP in the state stand as testimony which will speak and campaign for the party adding that candidates from other political parties should paste posters in projects they did.
He said the party would not take anything for granted as it would embark on aggressive campaigns from communities and wards in all the 17 local government areas of the state to sell their manifestos and ensure total victory for the party.
Governor Ikpeazu who wished the flagbearers of the party luck in the forth coming polls also enjoined them to work assiduously towards the success of the party.
“That you are the flagbearers of PDP in your local government areas does not mean that you are the best. You have been asked by the people to lead and the only way to lead is to serve.
“We want to raise servant leaders that will go and make their marks in the various local governments”, Ikpeazu said.
While reassuring that the local government elections will hold as scheduled on 18th December 2020, the Governor, called on Abians to vote the party in the forth coming elections as well as maintain peaceful disposition during the election.
In their various speeches, Former Deputy Governor of the state, Acho Nwakanma, Pioneer Chairman of the PDP, Chief Tony Ukasanya and Former Deputy Chairman of the PDP, Hon P.C Onyegbu while speaking on behalf of Abia South,Abia Central and Abia North respectively, commended the governor for agreeing to conduct local government elections which they said will ensure democracy dividends at the grassroots.
They promised that their zones will work effectively to deliver the party in the forth coming elections.
Chairman of the party, Asiforo Okere,noted that the choice of candidates at different local government areas of the state stems from the decision to deliver on the mandates of the party and expressed confidence that the flagbearers will deliver.
He noted that with the achievements of the PDP in Abia, the party will no doubt emerge victorious.
One of the candidates from Obingwa LGA, Michael Ibe Nwoke while interacting with National Ambassador, assured that he will bring to the fore his wealth of experience to change the narrative at the grassroot adding that he will work in tandem with the Ikpeazu administration to bring dividends of democracy to the people of Obingwa Local government area if elected.
The event which was chaired by Rt. Hon. Christopher Enweremmadu featured the reception of decampees from the All Progressive Congress (APC) led by Chief Karibe Ojigwe and was attended by the Deputy Governor among other top government officials and party faithfuls.
