Abia State Government has charged the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) to promote good governance, transparency, and accountability at the local government level.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzor Nwachukwu, gave the charge recently during the inauguration of the newly elected executive members of the group in Umuahia, Abia State.
The Commissioner, who maintained that the election marks a promising new chapter in the state, congratulated those elected, describing their emergence as a testament to their leadership qualities and the trust reposed in them by their colleagues.
Earlier, the body of Mayors in the state had elected Hon. Chinedu Ekeke, Mayor of Isuikwuato, as Chairman of ALGON, Abia State, in an overwhelming vote from all the 17 Mayors in the state, with Dr. Anthony Nwaubani of Ikwuano emerging as the Secretary and Mr. Anyanwu Obilor, Mayor of Aba South, coming tops as the Treasurer.
The newly elected executives, by their inauguration, are expected to work closely with Governor Dr. Alex Otti, who has pledged to support the local government in their development efforts.
