The Forum of Former Deputy Governors of Nigeria has identified the widening gap between political leadership and citizens, alongside the erosion of family and societal values, as key issues for deliberation at its 2026 National Conference scheduled for October 20 and 21.

Chairman of the Forum, Dr. Chris Akomas, disclosed this in Abuja after a meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC), which reviewed preparations for the conference and strategies to ensure its outcomes contribute to national development.
Akomas said the gathering of the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee was part of efforts to finalise arrangements for the conference and ensure its objectives were clearly communicated to members, government and the Nigerian public.
The conference, themed “Rethinking Nation Building: Bridging the Leadership-Citizen Disconnect through Orientation, Attitude, Character, Culture and Tradition Towards Sustainable Development,” is expected to examine the social and institutional challenges undermining national cohesion and progress.

According to Akomas, the disconnect affecting Nigeria extends beyond the relationship between government and the governed to families, communities and other segments of society, raising concerns about the values shaping individual behaviour and collective responsibility.
He cited drug abuse, addiction, the underutilisation of education and acquired skills, and the pursuit of quick wealth among some young people as manifestations of deeper social problems requiring urgent attention.
The Forum chairman stressed that addressing these challenges would require more than government policies, calling for renewed commitment to parental responsibility, family relationships and the transmission of positive values to younger generations.
He urged parents to devote more time to their children through regular interaction, shared meals and meaningful guidance, noting that the home remains a critical foundation for character formation and responsible citizenship.
The planned conference is expected to provide a platform for discussions on how leadership conduct, civic attitudes, cultural values and family institutions can be strengthened to promote sustainable development and rebuild public trust.
