Abia Woos Investors for Clean Cooking Industry

The Abia State Government has called for increased private-sector investment in clean cooking solutions, describing the emerging sector as an opportunity to drive green economic growth while improving environmental and public health outcomes

The Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Philemon Asonye Ogbonna, made the call during a workshop on developing a sustainable, market-driven clean cooking industry in the state, held at Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba.

Ogbonna said greater investment in clean cooking could help Abia address the environmental and health challenges associated with traditional cooking methods while creating new business opportunities and jobs.

He urged investors, private businesses and development partners to explore opportunities within the sector and support the implementation of the state’s Clean Cooking Plan.

According to him, Abia’s large population, expanding industrial base, technical expertise and vibrant commercial activities provide a strong foundation for developing a sustainable clean cooking market.

The commissioner encouraged stakeholders at the workshop to move beyond discussions and identify practical investment opportunities that could translate into increased access to cleaner and safer cooking options for residents.

He also called for stronger partnerships among government, businesses and development organisations, stressing that sustained collaboration would be necessary to expand clean cooking solutions across the state.

Ogbonna commended the Initiative for Energy Development and Environment (ICEED) for its collaboration with the state government and expressed appreciation to the Heinrich Böll Foundation for supporting efforts to promote clean cooking in Abia.

He said the government remained committed to initiatives that would promote a healthier environment, sustainable development and new economic opportunities for residents.
