Some people are born great, some have greatness thrust upon them, while others achieve greatness through determination, resilience and purposeful endeavour. Chief James Chijioke Umeh, the Ike Abam of Abam Onyerubi, clearly belongs to the category of those who have achieved greatness through dint of hard work, perseverance and God’s benevolence.
Born in Atan Abam, Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State, Chief Umeh began his professional journey as a journalist after completing his formal education. Over the years, through enterprise, vision and relentless commitment, he has grown into an accomplished entrepreneur with business interests spanning several sectors across the globe, including oil and gas, banking and finance, consultancy, media entrepreneurship, hospitality and tourism, property development, agriculture and manufacturing.
However, beyond his impressive business accomplishments, Ike Abam’s true distinction lies in the countless lives he has touched through his philanthropy, humanitarian interventions and unwavering commitment to the service of humanity.
His pet foundation, the Unubiko Foundation, has, over the years, earned recognition as one of the foremost charitable organisations in the country. Through the foundation, Chief Umeh has facilitated the reconstruction of several schools in his home community, including Ovukwu Secondary School, Atan Abam; Onyerubi Comprehensive Secondary School, Ndi Oji Abam; and Etiti Abam Community Secondary School, Atan Abam, among others.

The foundation also commits over ₦300 million annually to its scholarship scheme, benefiting students from across Abia State and Nigeria. In the area of water provision, the Unubiko Foundation has constructed motorised boreholes in several villages of Abam Onyerubi, helping to address the critical need for access to potable water.
It is also worthy to recall that Ike Abam single-handedly rehabilitated and retrofitted the Magistrate Court at Amaelu Abam, the ancestral headquarters of the Abam people. This intervention was accompanied by the provision of a borehole and a generator set.
He demonstrated a similar commitment in the modernisation, completion and retrofitting of the Ozu Abam Hall, a project that had been embarked upon by the Ozu Abam Women Development Union.
Perhaps one of the most outstanding aspects of his efforts can be found in his single-minded commitment and devotion to the cultural revival of his native land. His continuous and steady sponsorship of the yearly Ekponibro Festival has significantly elevated the historic Sea Merchants Festival, giving it international acclaim and recognition.
In December 2025, Chief Umeh further demonstrated his commitment to community development by building and donating a fully equipped, ultra-modern health centre to Ndi Okereke Abam.
On the same day, he also handed over a mini-estate comprising 120 flats to the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection for distribution to indigent women and widows in Atan Abam.
It was also on that same day that he formally handed over an ultra-modern church building in Idima Abam to the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria.
These interventions underscore the breadth of Chief Umeh’s philanthropy and the depth of his commitment to improving the lives of others.

His contributions to education and institutional development extend far beyond his immediate community. At the 2025 convocation ceremony of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Chief James Chijioke Umeh, the Ike Abam, donated the remarkable sum of ₦500 million towards efforts to rehabilitate and reposition the institution.
His humanitarian interventions were equally evident in 2021, during the outbreak of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic. Through the Unubiko Foundation, Chief Umeh was at the forefront of efforts to mitigate the impact of the disease, providing multimillion-naira palliatives to various communities and groups, including the Abia State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
It is against the backdrop of these remarkable contributions to humanity, community development and the preservation of culture that the Council of Abam Traditional Rulers and Ndi Eze Ogo conferred on him the revered title of “IKE ABAM.”
The Governor of Abia State, His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti, has since elevated the title to “IKE ABIA.” Chief James Chijioke Umeh is, without doubt, deserving of such recognitions, considering the breadth of his contributions and the enduring impact of his service to humanity.
In view of his numerous contributions to society, all well-meaning individuals are enjoined to join hands in celebrating this illustrious son of Abia as he marks another year of his highly impactful life.
Chief James Chijioke Umeh’s life has been one of remarkable impact, defined not merely by personal accomplishments, but also by an enduring commitment to the welfare of others. His journey reflects a life of enterprise, service, philanthropy, cultural preservation and community development.
As he celebrates his birthday, we wish him good health, greater accomplishments, abundant grace, continued prosperity and many more years of fruitful service to humanity.
