Today is world Tourism Day. It is celebrated on September 27th every year, and the theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Tourism for inclusive growth’ . And it focuses not on numbers but people who are behind these number, who work really hard to make the tourism industry a grand success.
A tourism expert in Port Harcourt Oluwaseun Omole has accused the U.K of racism and segregation. This was after the United Kingdom said people who received their Covid-19 vaccine in Africa, Indian and certain other places will be considered as unvaccinated when they travel and would be treated as such.
Mr Omole who is the business manager of Ufit Flight Tour Company told our reporter that U.K’s decision would greatly affect the tourism sector which is struggling to grow after 12 months of being hit with the Covid-19 pandemic.
The tourism expert however, questioned why the United Kingdom would segregate the country even when the World Health Organization (WHO) approved all vaccines being used to fight the pandemic.
He further said that a lot of sporting activities are happening right now in the United Kingdom, and with this policy it will really affect the whole world.
Meanwhile, an activist Ray Njokwu in an interview with our reporter said Covid-19 pandemic has really affected tourism. He said people take pleasure in traveling and seeing different places but with the Covid-19 pandemic, everything has come to stand still.
Mr Njokwu further said that it is the tourism industry that faced the repercussions of the pandemic and multiple lockdowns. Adding that even the marginalised community and the daily wage earners faced the burnt of it.
The activist however said for reviving the tourism economy and revenue, several travel curbs should be lifted.
