Labour Party Commends INEC for Reinstating Candidate in Enugu North By-Election

The Labour Party (LP) has lauded the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for correcting what it described as the erroneous exclusion of the party and its candidate from the list of contestants for the forthcoming Enugu North Senatorial District by-election.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, the LP expressed satisfaction with INEC’s decision to rectify the omission following engagements with the commission.

The party recalled that when INEC initially released the list of political parties and candidates cleared to participate in the various by-elections across the country, the Labour Party and its candidate were omitted from the Enugu North Senatorial District contest despite having fulfilled all constitutional and statutory requirements.

According to the statement, the commission’s correction has now restored the party’s participation in the June 20, 2026 by-election, enabling it to present its candidate to the electorate and offer what it described as credible and people-focused representation in the remaining tenure of the 10th Senate.

The Labour Party commended INEC for demonstrating fairness and responsiveness, noting that the commission’s action has helped reinforce public confidence in the electoral process.

“The commission has demonstrated responsiveness and strengthened confidence in the electoral system by ensuring that the right thing was done,” the statement noted.

The party also expressed appreciation to its members, supporters and well-wishers for their concern and steadfast support following the initial exclusion.

As campaigns enter their final phase, the Labour Party wished its candidates in the Enugu North, Nasarawa North and Rivers South-East by-elections success at the polls.

It further expressed optimism that the conduct and outcome of the elections would contribute to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and deepen citizens’ trust in the nation’s electoral process.
