June 12: Democracy Remains Nigeria’s Greatest Strength — Fubara

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has described democracy as the most viable system of government for Nigeria, saying it remains the nation’s strongest pathway to unity, sustainable development, and shared prosperity.

In a message marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, Governor Fubara congratulated Nigerians at home and in the diaspora, noting that June 12 symbolizes the nation’s enduring quest for freedom, justice, and representative governance.

The governor paid tribute to the heroes of Nigeria’s democratic struggle, particularly Chief M.K.O. Abiola, his wife, Kudirat Abiola, and other patriots whose sacrifices laid the foundation for the democratic system enjoyed today.

According to him, Democracy Day serves as a reminder of the courage and sacrifices made by those who fought for the people’s right to choose their leaders.

“June 12 reminds us of the price paid for the democracy we enjoy today. The sacrifices of Chief M.K.O. Abiola, Kudirat Abiola, and many other patriots continue to inspire generations of Nigerians. Their unwavering belief that power ultimately belongs to the people remains a guiding principle for our democracy,” he stated.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey since the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election, Fubara acknowledged the challenges encountered over the years but commended the resilience of democratic institutions and the determination of Nigerians in sustaining the nation’s democratic process.

He noted that despite setbacks, the country’s democracy has continued to mature, providing citizens the opportunity to express diverse opinions, engage in constructive dialogue, and elect leaders through the ballot box.

The governor further emphasized that democracy offers the best framework for managing Nigeria’s ethnic, religious, and cultural diversity, transforming it into a source of national strength rather than division.

“Nigeria’s diversity should never be viewed as a weakness. When properly harnessed, it becomes one of our greatest assets. Democracy enables us to promote inclusion, build consensus, strengthen national unity, and create opportunities for sustainable growth and collective prosperity,” he said.

Fubara also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for pursuing the Renewed Hope Agenda and implementing policies aimed at economic recovery, enhanced security, and the strengthening of democratic institutions.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Rivers State Government to collaborate with the Federal Government in advancing programmes and infrastructure projects designed to improve the welfare of citizens.
