The Abia State Head of Service, Mr. Benson Ojeikere, has introduced a new initiative known as the Commitment Pledge to promote accountability, responsibility, and excellence across the State Public Service. The initiative is aimed at encouraging public servants to remain committed to their duties and uphold the highest standards of professionalism in service delivery.
Speaking during an Expanded Management and Mentorship Session held in Umuahia, Ojeikere described the Commitment Pledge as a strategic policy designed to strengthen the values, ethics, and professional standards of the Public Service. He explained that the pledge would serve as a guiding principle for workers, helping to build a responsive, efficient, and results-oriented workforce capable of meeting the expectations of government and citizens.
According to the Head of Service, the policy has already been communicated through an official circular and will be observed either at the beginning or end of official meetings in all Ministries, Departments, Agencies, and Bureaus (MDAs). He noted that the practice would continually remind workers of their responsibilities and commitment to delivering quality service.
Ojeikere emphasized that the reputation and effectiveness of the Public Service depend largely on the ability of workers to produce measurable results while maintaining integrity and professionalism. He urged civil servants to remain dedicated to their responsibilities and contribute meaningfully to the achievement of government goals and improved service delivery across the state.
He further stated that the changing nature of governance requires a workforce that is disciplined, innovative, and willing to embrace continuous improvement. He highlighted the importance of productive engagement, effective supervision, and mentorship in developing a new generation of public service leaders who can sustain institutional growth and drive excellence within the Service.
The Head of Service also called on workers to embrace a culture of accountability and performance, stressing that public trust in government institutions grows when public servants consistently demonstrate integrity, dedication, and a strong sense of duty. He noted that such values are essential for building confidence in government programmes and policies.
As part of ongoing reforms, Ojeikere encouraged Ministries, Departments, Agencies, and Bureaus to identify, recognize, and reward outstanding officers who distinguish themselves through diligence, innovation, and exceptional service. He said recognizing excellence would motivate workers and promote healthy competition within the Public Service.
Reaffirming his commitment to reform, the Head of Service stated that his office would continue to implement policies that improve efficiency, strengthen institutional capacity, reward excellence, and enhance service delivery across the state. He expressed confidence that the collective efforts of public servants would further position the Abia State Public Service as a model of professionalism, accountability, and excellence.
He added that with dedication, teamwork, and a shared commitment to high standards, the Abia State Public Service would continue to support sustainable development and deliver greater value to the people of the state.
