Police, Judiciary Strengthen Partnership for Faster Justice

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command and the High Court of the FCT have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening collaboration aimed at improving the administration of justice and strengthening the rule of law in the nation’s capital.

This commitment was reiterated when the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Judge of the High Court of the FCT, Justice Husseini Baba Yusuf, at the High Court complex in Abuja.

Speaking during the visit, CP Sanusi stressed that effective policing and efficient justice delivery are closely linked, noting that sustained cooperation between the police and the judiciary is essential for tackling crime and ensuring timely prosecution of offenders.

He commended the cordial working relationship between the FCT Police Command and the judiciary, describing it as instrumental to effective law enforcement and the successful prosecution of criminal cases.

The police commissioner, however, drew attention to operational challenges affecting criminal investigations, particularly delays in obtaining judicial approvals such as search warrants, bench warrants and other court orders. He appealed for continued judicial support to ensure the prompt processing of such applications and improve investigative efficiency.

Sanusi also expressed concern over the slow pace of prosecution in some criminal cases, noting that prolonged trials often result in suspects spending extended periods in police custody, thereby contributing to congestion in detention facilities.

In his response, Justice Yusuf welcomed the police commissioner and congratulated him on his appointment, expressing confidence in his ability to strengthen security and enhance justice administration in the FCT.

The Chief Judge acknowledged the concerns raised by the police commissioner and assured him of the judiciary’s continued support in promoting speedy and effective justice delivery. He also urged the police to sustain professionalism while reaffirming the judiciary’s commitment to maintaining the longstanding partnership between both institutions.
