The Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, has said that Nigeria must invest more in proper education to raise responsible children and secure a better future for the country.
He made this known during the plenary session of the 2026 Law Week of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Yenagoa Branch, held at the NCDMB Conference Hall.
Speaking at the event, Ogbuku expressed worry over the increasing level of corruption in the country. He blamed part of the problem on negative influences from the internet and social media.
He said Nigeria needs to teach children the right values and provide them with quality education.
“We must invest in the right education for our children. Many foreign influences have affected our society, and only good education can help put our country back on the right path,” he said.
Ogbuku also stressed the need for Nigerians to learn from past mistakes while planning for the future.
“As we work to build a better future, we must look at where we went wrong in the past. We need to find our way back and rediscover our purpose,” he added.
Former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, who chaired the event, agreed with Ogbuku’s position. He said the country’s education system should be improved to prepare young people for future challenges and opportunities.
The keynote speaker, Prof. Patrick Lumumba of Kenya, spoke about the need for African countries to unite. According to him, Africa can only achieve real progress and protect its resources when its people work together.
“We have a duty to protect our future, but we must first be united. Unity is the key to protecting our resources and achieving development,” Lumumba said.
He also encouraged Africans to move away from colonial-era thinking and focus on building a stronger and more independent continent. His lecture was titled, “Sustainable National Assets Protection in Africa: Opportunities, Risks and Regulatory Pathways.”
Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Nimibofa Ayaowei, called on the NBA to uphold discipline and professional standards among lawyers.
The Chairman of the NBA Yenagoa Branch, Mr. Clement Kekemeke, urged lawyers to play a greater role in nation-building and contribute positively to society beyond their legal duties.
The theme of the 2026 Law Week was “Securing the Future.” Other important personalities at the event included the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri.
