NURTW Launches ‘Operation Show Your PVC’ Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Abia State, Comrade Azodu Chukwuma, popularly known as China, has directed transport union leaders across the state to immediately commence grassroots mobilisation for voter registration and participation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Tuesday during a stakeholders’ engagement meeting convened by the Abia State Government at the Labour Party State Secretariat in Umuahia, the NURTW chairman said transport unions possess one of the largest social networks in the state and are strategically positioned to drive awareness on good governance and civic responsibility.

He noted that transport operators serve as agents of information dissemination, educating citizens on government policies and the importance of participating in the electoral process.

According to him, transport workers, cooperatives, market traders and artisans must play active roles in encouraging residents to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and support leaders committed to infrastructural development and effective governance.

He commended Governor Alex Otti’s administration for what he described as visible improvements in road infrastructure and public service delivery, stressing that Abians have witnessed significant changes compared to previous administrations.

Chukwuma maintained that transport workers are among the largest workforce on election days and therefore have a critical responsibility in ensuring voter participation and the success of democratic processes.

He emphasized that the transportation sector reaches virtually every community and household, making it a vital channel for communicating government achievements and mobilising support for sustained development.

The NURTW chairman urged all stakeholders to move beyond discussions and focus on implementation of resolutions reached at the meeting. He subsequently announced the commencement of an awareness campaign tagged “Operation Show Your PVC,” directing all transport unions in the state to encourage passengers and members to obtain their voter cards as part of efforts to deepen democratic participation.

“Let us be dedicated to our fatherland. There is no way good governance can be achieved without using your PVC to vote for the right leaders. What we need now is implementation. We must practicalise everything we have discussed here and ensure that our people are fully mobilised for voter registration and participation,” he said.
