Dr. Oluebube Chukwu, Senior Special Assistant to the Abia State Governor on Due Process, has called on members of the Rotary Club of Umuahia District 9142 to consistently uphold integrity in their professional environments.
Speaking as guest speaker during the club’s weekly fellowship in Umuahia, titled “Integrity in the Workplace,” Dr. Oluebube Chukwu emphasized that as members of Rotary International, they are committed to service, leadership, and, most importantly, ethical conduct.
He asserted, “Integrity is not just a virtue we claim; it is an ongoing responsibility we must uphold.” Reflecting on his professional journey, he shared situations that personally tested his integrity, noting that the choices he faced during those moments were not always easy, but they ultimately shaped him.
Dr. Chukwu explained that integrity is a continuous journey that requires daily commitment, self-discipline, and courage. He elaborated on what it means to cultivate integrity in the workplace, discussing the ideal culture it should foster, the challenges faced, and the actions necessary to uphold it.
He pointed out that many mistakenly believe that integrity is merely about being honest or doing the right thing when confronted with an ethical dilemma. While this is true, he stressed that integrity is more than a single act of honesty; it is a lifestyle, a deliberate choice made every day rather than a fleeting emotion.
Dr. Oluebube Chukwu recalled an early experience in his career when he faced pressure to approve a financial transaction that, while technically legal, was morally questionable. The individual involved argued that it was standard practice and insisted that no one would find out.
He faced two choices: to compromise his values for convenience or to stand firm, knowing it might cost him politically or financially. He chose the latter, a decision that was difficult and resulted in some resistance and a temporary loss of favour with certain individuals. However, over time, the respect and trust he gained from colleagues and clients far outweighed the momentary hardship.
Dr. Chukwu maintained that in the workplace, individuals of integrity become pillars of trust. Leaders with integrity create environments where transparency and accountability thrive. Employees with integrity inspire their peers and contribute to long-term organizational success. He also acknowledged that integrity is not always easy, which is why we must foster a culture where integrity is not just encouraged but expected.
He stated that accountability at all levels must start from the top. Leaders must lead by example; if management bends the rules or engages in unethical practices, employees will follow suit. One of the greatest misconceptions about integrity is that it is a fixed state of perfection. The truth is that even the most ethical individuals will face challenges and temptations. What defines us is not the absence of struggle but our willingness to continuously strive for better.
He reminded the Rotary Club of Umuahia District 9142 that they are called to set an example for their communities and professions. Their words and actions must reflect the values they uphold. He challenged them to always uphold integrity in their workplace, set the right example for those who look up to them, choose what is right even when it is difficult, and collectively make integrity the foundation of their leadership and service. By doing so, they will not only transform their workplaces but also create a legacy of ethical excellence that will outlive them.
Finally, Dr. Chukwu was inducted into the Rotary Club of Umuahia District 9142 as a member after taking the oath to join. He expressed his gratitude to the Rotary Club and appreciated them for the privilege and promised to abide by the ethics of the Rotary Club.
