Government to Remove Structures Built on Waterways in Umuahia
Government says it will, at any moment from now, commence the removal of structures built on waterways that obstruct the free movement of water along the Une Ehimiri axis of Ogurube Layout, Umuahia
The General Manager, Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) Mr Kingsley Agomoh, who disclosed this to newsmen said the demolition followed the expiration of the deadline given to the owners of the structures.
He explained that the natural waterways of the area have been overrun by structural development, thereby resulting in flooding and drastic ecosystem disruption that would affect livability in the area in the long run.
According to Mr Agomoh, it has become pertinent to safeguard the natural waterways and ensure a proper drainage system in the axis of the state capital.
The UCDA General Manager revealed that the National Population Commission’s office and Federal Pay Office along the axis have already been overrun by the buildings erected on the waterways, maintaining that the exercise is in line with the Development Control Regulations 2021,
Mr Agomoh said that the waterways which stretch from Une Isieke through Nkata back of Abia State House of Assembly to International Conference Centre fence through Winners’ Church to Ehimiri ought not to be obstructed with, fences and structures to give way for free movement of water
He reiterated the present administration’s determination to protect lives and property through a for a conducive environment for human habitation
