The Rivers State Government says there is no cause for alarm, following a 7 day strike by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN)
The Rivers State Commissioner for Energy and Natural Resources Dr Peter Mende in an interview said there is no need for residents to embark on stock hoarding of petroleum products due to the planned strike.
Dr Peter explained that there would be adequate supply of petroleum product in the State during the period of strike by PENGASSAN.
“Products would be available. The respective union has assured us that they will continue to provide their services. So there is no need for panic buying and storing of product at home to avoid untold consequences”
The Commissioner for Energy and Natural Resources, further ,advised Rivers people to be calm, while they continue to negotiate, interact and engage in all efforts to ensure they resolve the crises and strike.
Dr Mende also said issues that led to the strike of PENGASSAN are directed towards Federal Government and not the State.
” And as a State, we have little to do to handle the problem. And as a State, we have been in contact with other sister unions. And they have assured us that they are not part of the strike, even though they are in sympathy with the demands made by PENGASSAN” he stated.
He stressed that since their sister unions are not part of the strike, it means that there is relative stability in the sector. And as a result of this stability, there will not be any form of fuel scarcity.
