Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has directed the immediate relocation of the Abia State University (ABSU) Umuahia campus back to its main site in Uturu, with the exception of the Faculty of Law.
The announcement follows the release of the white paper from the university’s visitation panel, which highlighted the need for consolidation to enhance student learning experiences.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu disclosed this while briefing Journalists on the outcome of this week’s Exco meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
According to the Commissioner, all departments and faculties currently based in Umuahia, except for the Faculty of Law, are to return to the Uturu campus “without delay”.
“Except for the Faculty of Law that will be undergoing some accreditation. The rest of the departments and faculties in Umuahia should go back.
“Once they are through with the accreditation process, they will join suit and relocate back to Uturu.
“In most parts of the world, campuses are consolidated in one particular location to enhance the studies of the students.
“The Honorable Commissioner for Tertiary Education is to ensure full compliance of this relocation”, Prince Kanu stated.
The Commissioner disclosed that the state would soon commence the USAID-sponsored Mercy Corps intervention project, aimed at rehabilitating and reconnecting water supply systems in homes and public places with the official flag-off slated for November 20, 2024.
He said that the initiative which would prioritize areas such as Ariaria and Ubakala water scheme is “in line with the state government’s agenda to revive moribund water schemes across the state and build new ones to ensure that all Abia homes have functional tap water”.
He further revealed that plans are underway for the highly anticipated Aba International Trade Fair Summit and Exhibition, scheduled to take place from November 28 to December 7 at the Aba Mall, along the Umuahia-Aba Expressway in Osisioma Local Government Area.
Prince Kanu while emphasizing that the trade fair serves as a platform to showcase the state’s abundant investment opportunities,added that the event demonstrates the state government’s commitment to partnering with the Aba Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture.
He noted that the Governor in a bid to underscore the significance of the trade fair, has appointed the Deputy Governor Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu to oversee the planning of the event while the Special Adviser to the Governor on Trade and Commerce will chair the joint organizing committee.
He further informed that the “Ten Million Know Your Number, Control Your Number” health programme has been extended to the end of this week with a total number of 33,000 persons screened so far and called on Abians and residents to participate in the free screening exercise as to know their health status.
Prince Kanu described the just concluded Local Government elections in the state as free and fair leading to the emergence of a Councillorship candidate from a political party that did not participate in the elections.
He said that the Abia State Government would on Thursday this week hold an interdenominational commendation service in honour of the first democratically elected Governor of Abia State, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia while his remains would be laid to rest on Friday this week at his Uburu country home in Ohaozara LGA of Ebonyi State.
