2015: Why GEJ Conceded Defeat

Mr Femi Falana, SAN, has revealed that fear of arrest and prosecution by the International Criminal Court, ICC, forced former president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to concede defeat in 2015.

The former president on many occasions has always maintained that he conceded defeat in the overall interest of Nigerians, adding that his ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian.

Countering above position at the inauguration of the League of Anambra Professionals Legal Defence Initiative, held in Lagos, December 16, Falana said ICC had in 2015, prior to elections issued warning that any leader that annuls an election would be prosecuted.

The human Rights Activist explained that he made the revelation to allay the fears and anxiety of Nigerians on whether President Muhammadu Buhari will concede defeat if he(Buhari) loses.

“Whoever does that now will end up in The Hague. He is likely to be tried for crimes against humanity because if you annul an election, you are likely to have a monumental violence in the country which will lead to crimes against humanity,” said Falana.

“Before the 2015 elections, the ICC warned that if there was any problem in Nigeria, anybody who was responsible would be arrested and charged like former President Laurent Gbagbo of Cote d’Ivoire. That was the atmosphere under which President Goodluck conceded victory,” he added.
