More than four decades ago, when Mike and Garry Robinson left Nigeria, they carried with them something that could never be packed into a suitcase—the priceless memories of a country that shaped their childhood and left an indelible mark on their lives.

Among those cherished memories was a simple yet remarkable drink called Chapman. More than just a refreshing beverage, it became a symbol of joy, friendship and the unforgettable experiences they shared while growing up in Nigeria. That memory endured through the years, crossing continents and generations.

Yesterday, after more than 40 years, Mike and Garry returned to Nigeria—not merely to revisit the past, but to create a new chapter in history. Together, we signed a landmark trade partnership and distribution agreement to introduce Ikoyi Chapmans to Nigeria and, ultimately, to markets across Africa.

While some may see this as simply another business transaction, yesterday’s ceremony represented something far greater. It marked the renewal of longstanding bonds of friendship, family and shared purpose. It demonstrated how meaningful relationships, built over time and across cultures, can inspire innovation, create opportunities and drive transformative change.

What began as a casual first meeting with Mike and Garry has evolved into a lifelong friendship and a strong business partnership. More importantly, it has become a symbol of the enduring relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom—a partnership rooted not only in commercial opportunity but also in mutual respect, shared values and a common vision for the future.

As a token of appreciation and cultural pride, I had the honour of presenting Mike and Garry with the Nigerian Coat of Arms, symbolising the nation whose memories they continue to cherish. They were also presented with traditional Igbo Isi Agu attire, customised crested hand fans bearing their names, traditional beads and the iconic red cap—gifts that reflect our cultural heritage and celebrate a partnership founded on trust, friendship and shared aspirations.
I extend my sincere appreciation to our strategic partner, Dr. Efosa Ogbeide, and to everyone who has believed in and contributed to this vision. I am confident that this partnership will not only create new opportunities for Nigeria but will also contribute significantly to the growth of Africa’s beverage industry, fostering innovation, investment and stronger commercial ties across the continent.
This is more than the launch of a beverage.
It is the beginning of a journey that celebrates history, honours friendship, bridges cultures and creates a lasting legacy for generations to come.
