Labour Party Forms 29-Member Caretaker Committee, Sets 90-Day Timeline For New Leadership

 

A 29-Member Caretaker Committee, led by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman and Senator Darlington Nwokocha, as Secretary, has been set up by the Labour Party, (LP) to oversee the election of a new party leadership within the next 90 days.

 

 

This decision was reached at the Party’s National Executive Council (NEC) and Extended Stakeholders Meeting held at the Government House in Umuahia, Abia State.

 

According to the Communique issued by the Party’s NEC/Extended Stakeholders, other Committee Members includes; three Senators, four members of the House of Representatives, three State Assembly Members, and Representatives from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and Gubernatorial Candidates from the last election.

 

 

The Committee Members were mandated to organize Ward, Local Government, State Congresses and National Convention to elect new party leaders in line with the Labour Party’s constitution and “to ensure there is no vacuum in the leadership of the party” .

It equally commended Governor Alex Otti of Abia state and his leadership for hosting the meeting and enjoined members of the party to support the caretaker Committee to achieve its mandate.

 

In a welcome speech, the Host, Governor Otti, who stressed the importance of resolving the party’s internal issues, said the meeting was too chart a way forward for the party.

The Governor noted that the tenure of the National Working Committee (NWC), led by Barr. Julius Abure, had ended on June 10, 2024, and called for unity among stakeholders.

 

He stated that “the overall interest is the survival of the party, not necessarily the composition of the NWC as soon as it is constitutionally composed”.

In his remarks, the Party’s National Leader and 2023 Presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, emphasized the need to follow legal guidelines to prevent the party’s collapse and urged members to support the caretaker committee in carrying out its mandate.

He noted that the Labour being the 3rd largest party in Nigeria has the potential of being the brightest if things are put in the right perspective and urged members of the party to give the caretaker Committee the needed support to enable it succeed in its assignment.

Responding on behalf of the members of the Caretaker Committee, the Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman expressed gratitude to the national leader of the party, Mr Peter Obi and other stakeholders for finding them fit for the task and assured that they will justify the confidence reposed in them.

Highpoints of the meeting was the reaffirmation of implicit confidence in the leadership of the national leader of the party, Mr Peter Obi and the resolution that all members with legal case against the party should withdraw same for the overall interest of the party.
