Tricycle operators in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, today, marched around the streets of Umuahia, destroying the Abia state Environmental Protection Agency(ASEPA) buckets with sticker, saying they were forcefully asked to purchase the buckets at exorbitant price.
The tricycle drivers popular known as keke napep were sited by our reporter within Aba road by Azikiwe, stopping and smashing the buckets from their members who have already purchased it.
According to them, it is inhumane and high level of extortion from Abia state government, forcing them to buy 3 litres bucket with stickers at such an exorbitant price, of one thousand naira, adding that their tricycles have spaces behind where they can pack refuse and dispose at government designated refuse points.
Speaking with a Keke operator, who do not want his name disclosed, said that the government is nolonger sensitive to the plight of the masses, asking how can a government that has all the resources at their beck and call, still look for ways to exploit the masses of the little they have.
He said the buckets should have been sold at a lesser price or better still distributed freely to keke owners, calling on the government to respond quickly to the situation,as they will not tolerate any form of extortion from any government agency.
