For some time now, the level of insecurity in Rivers state has reached an alarming stage to the extent that people are living in fiasco because every day brings a new story in a new dimension, if it is not breaking of peoples doors to gain entrance to stealing raping of girls and women even the pregnant women, it is an open day robbery or the clashes of cults groups.
This has left residents to no option than to run for dear lives, as is in the case of residents of Diobu water fronts, where the people had abandoned their houses and ran to other locations. For example, a man watched his wife and two daughters raped by these bandits. The man wept for some time and left Port Harcourt with his family heart broken.
As these terrible events continue to unfold, people have no other option than to call for state police such as neighbourhood watch and the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN)
Our reporters Mr Bestman Orji and Mrs Jane Nzeuzor had interview with some respondents, concerning the ugly incidents and they call for establishment of state police.
Dr Miracle ND Odibo Tom Big Harry is of the opinion that what is responsible for constant cults clashes, rapes, robbery and other vices, is lack of employment opportunities for the youths which is the major reason because an idle man is a devil’s workshop.
“It must be stated here that majority of the youths are unemployed, and once they are gainfully employed, the crime will drastically reduce, or if the Government provides skill acquisition for the youths, they will be self-made, fulfilled and will no longer have time for crime
Also wealthy individuals should assist the government by employing the youths in their establishments.
Lack of sensitization of the youths by orientation agencies is another reason for constant killings, rapes, robbery, cultists’ clashes and other vices engulfing the state.
“According to Dr Miracle, the orientation agencies should make the youths realize the strong arm of the law against such social vices they are involved in. So it is everyone’s duty to tell the youth that their live are equally in danger.
“Re-emergence of Neigbourhood watch and other sister grassroots security agencies is apparently a 95% solution to fighting insurgency, as it will complement the efforts of other senior security agencies in the state and the nation at large, for example, the Vigilante Group of Nigeria established by law is yet to be incorporated by the State Government to complement the efforts of other superior agencies in preventing and fighting crime.
VGN is a grassroots crime preventing and fighting outfit established by the federal government while Neighbourhood watch is the same established by the Rivers State Government if there is a synergy between us and the State Government, there will be an absolute secured and crime free atmosphere in Rivers state complementing the efforts of other security agencies” he stated.
