The Esit Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State has concluded plans to organize an agricultural summit to educate farmers, youths, and women on the many opportunities available in modern farming.
The Chairman of the council, Mrs. Uduak Ikot, made this known on Thursday at the council secretariat. She said the summit will give participants practical knowledge on improved farming methods, agribusiness, and value chain development. She also encouraged more people to take up commercial farming.
Mrs. Ikot said agriculture remains one of the best ways to tackle unemployment and economic hardship. She noted that the administration of Governor Umo Eno has continued to promote agriculture as a major tool for economic growth and food security in the state.
According to her, the initiative is aimed at encouraging the cultivation of watermelon and other crops as a way to improve livelihoods, generate income, and create jobs for residents of Esit Eket.
She explained that watermelon farming is a profitable business because of its high demand in the market and its short growing period.
The chairman said three major varieties of watermelon are currently being cultivated on a five-hectare farm. They are Pineapple Watermelon, Sugar Baby Watermelon, and Giant Watermelon. She noted that each variety has its own nutritional benefits and market value.
Mrs. Ikot added that the Giant Watermelon is especially profitable, as a single fruit can sell for as much as ₦15,000, making it a good source of income for farmers.
She also explained that watermelon farming does not require large areas of land. According to her, the crop can be grown in home gardens and backyards, making it easier for families to increase their income.
The chairman said the initiative is designed to encourage residents of Esit Eket to embrace agriculture instead of depending only on white-collar jobs.
She stated that the project is expected to create employment opportunities for youths, women, and other interested residents across the local government area. She added that it will also boost local businesses, improve food supply, and promote self-reliance among community members.
Mrs. Ikot urged residents to take advantage of the opportunity, describing agriculture as a reliable path to economic empowerment and sustainable development.
She maintained that with the right support, training, and commitment, watermelon farming could become one of the leading agricultural businesses in Esit Eket and contribute significantly to the success of Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE Agenda.
