Cross River Holds 5th Solemn Assembly, Appeals to NLC to Halt Planned Strike

The Cross River State Government has hosted the 5th Solemn Assembly at the U.J. Esuene Stadium, Calabar, with Pastor Jerry Eze of Streams of Joy International as the guest speaker.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Bassey Otu, the Deputy Governor, Hon. Peter Odey, appealed to the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Cross River chapter, to suspend its planned two-day warning strike. He assured workers that the governor is prioritizing their welfare and working tirelessly to address their concerns.

Hon. Odey emphasized Governor Otu’s “People First” mantra, urging citizens to remain prayerful and supportive of the administration’s efforts to transform the state. He highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects across the state’s three senatorial districts, including road construction, rehabilitation of the Governor’s Office, and enhancements to the health, agriculture, and education sectors.

The Deputy Governor also disclosed that the government is rehabilitating state-owned lodges in Calabar, Abuja, and Lagos. Additionally, he noted that Cross River was among the first states to increase the minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦40,000 before the recent federal announcement of a ₦70,000 national minimum wage.

He reassured citizens of the government’s commitment to both serving and retired workers by addressing gratuities, regularizing pension payments, and implementing overdue promotions for state employees.

Delivering the sermon titled “Ebenezer – A State Helped by God,” Pastor Jerry Eze expressed his delight at the state’s initiative in organizing the Solemn Assembly. He commended Cross River for being one of the few states that prioritizes spiritual matters in governance.

Pastor Eze encouraged Christians, particularly those in leadership positions, to lead with the fear of God and live Christ-like lives, emphasizing the importance of integrity and service in leadership.
