The South-East Chess Classics, tagged “The Battle of Titans,” came to a glorious end on Saturday, with Tyowase Collins emerging champion of the Open category.
The competition, organised by the Abia State Chess Association in collaboration with the Abia State Government and the Abia State Sports Council, saw 35 chess players receive cash awards across the various categories.
In the U-16 category, Okwosa Emmanuel won the gold medal, alongside a gold trophy and a cash prize of ₦100,000.
Bayelsa-born Bayefa Oyeinkeperemo claimed the silver medal and received ₦80,000, while Moses Johnson finished third, taking home the bronze medal and ₦50,000.
In the U-2000 category, Okwosa Joshua emerged champion, carting home a gold trophy, a gold medal and ₦200,000.
Osayade Kingsley finished second and received the silver medal and ₦150,000, while Ajie Ebenezer took the bronze medal and a cash prize of ₦100,000.
The women were also well represented, with Aisha Azumi Sulaiman, the current national women’s open champion, finishing first, followed by Abiakpor Treasure in second place and Omezuru Miracle Chinyere in third.
In the Open category, Omorere Benjamin finished as runner-up, while Emmanuel Joy Idara placed third behind champion Tyowase Collins.
The championship was an International Chess Federation (FIDE)-rated competition, meaning players’ performances at the tournament will contribute to their ratings and ranking in the global chess system.
The successful conclusion of the South-East Chess Classics further provided a competitive platform for players from across the region and beyond to test their skills while promoting the development of chess in Abia State and the South-East.
