Women in Rivers State have been encouraged to move beyond traditional support roles and take a more active part in politics, entrepreneurship and other areas of public life.
This was disclosed during the September monthly prayer meeting of Rivers Women Unite for SIM (RWUS), in collaboration with Rivers Women Unite Organisation (RWUOG), held today in Port-Harcourt.
The meeting brought together women for prayers, spiritual reflection, business enlightenment and discussions on personal and economic empowerment.
Leading the spiritual session, Dr. Mrs. Queen Karibi-Botoye guided participants through prayers and other spiritual exercises.
In her remarks, Honourable Dr. Mrs. Tekena Wokoma, a politician and entrepreneur, challenged women to develop the confidence and capacity to seek leadership positions and participate actively in decision-making.
Wokoma urged the women not to limit themselves to supporting political campaigns, but to aspire to become candidates, elected representatives and leaders in their communities.
She also encouraged them to take advantage of legitimate business and financial opportunities, stressing the need for discipline, honesty and responsible management of financial facilities.
According to her, women who access loans or other forms of business support should honour their repayment obligations and protect their credibility through integrity and responsible financial management.
On political participation, Dr. Mrs. Nancy Nwankwo advised the women against selling their votes during elections.
She urged them to protect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and make informed decisions at the polls, noting that short-term material benefits should not determine choices with long-term implications for communities.
Also speaking, Dr. Margaret Ayara, a member of RWUOG, said the organisation had continued to promote skills acquisition and economic empowerment among women.
Ayara said equipping women with practical skills could improve their economic independence, strengthen families and enhance their contributions to community development.
The organisers said the meeting reinforced the importance of empowering women through spirituality, knowledge, economic opportunities and participation in public affairs.
