Abia 2027: Lawmaker Erondu Jnr Enters Senate Race, Picks APC Form

The member representing Obingwa-West State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Erondu Uchenna Erondu Jnr, has formally joined the race for the Abia South Senatorial seat after purchasing the All Progressives Congress (APC) nomination form.

His entry into the contest follows weeks of consultations and mounting pressure from party stakeholders and political groups across the Abia South Senatorial District who had urged him to run.

Erondu Jnr, a former Chairman of Obingwa Local Government Area, is seeking to unseat incumbent Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who has represented the district in the National Assembly for almost two decades and is bidding for a sixth consecutive term.

As Chairman of the House Committee on Public Service Matters, the lawmaker has stepped up engagement with party leaders and grassroots supporters across Obingwa, Aba North, Aba South, Ukwa East, Ukwa West and Ugwunagbo Local Government Areas in a move to strengthen his support base ahead of the primaries.

Observers note that the purchase of the nomination form signals a transition from exploratory moves to full participation, placing Erondu Jnr among the frontline aspirants for the APC ticket.

The contest is unfolding against the backdrop of growing criticism from some stakeholders in the district, who argue that the area has not experienced sufficient development despite years of representation at the Senate. The development has fueled calls for a more responsive and results-driven leadership.

Backers of Erondu Jnr, however, cite his record in grassroots empowerment, particularly initiatives targeting youths and women, as evidence of his capacity to deliver effective representation.

He has also outlined plans to attract key projects to the district, including the establishment of a government-owned university and vocational training centres aimed at expanding educational access and boosting local economic growth.

With the race gradually taking shape, political activities in Abia South are expected to intensify in the coming months as parties and aspirants position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
