Following the attack on the convoy of the Abia State Commissioner for Trade,Commerce and Industry in Aba, where two police officers were murdered in cold blood, the member representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon Emeka Nnamani, has raised a Matter of Urgent Public Importance, calling on the House to intervene swiftly,while the House instructs that the perpetrators be brought to book.
During its plenary today, 27th of July 2023, Hon Nnamani, moved a motion,noting that the violent attack by hoodlums in the South Eastern part of Nigeria, has assumed a very dangerous trend in recent time, informing the House that the attack on highly placed Nigerians is also escalating at an increased proportion and if such trend is not quickly nipped in the bud, could result to threat to the government at all levels, personnel and others.
Hon Nnamani further informed the House of the increasing attacks on prominent Nigerians by unknown gunmen in the South East and other regions of Nigeria, giving reference to he attack on Sen Ifeanyi Uba, the past Governors of Imo State Sen Rochas Okorocha, and lkedi Ohakim, Apostle Johnson Suleman (in the North Central),adding that in all of these attacks, the nation has lost brave
policemen.
He also emphasized that government provides police protection around
government officials but lamented that the security is usually inadequate
especially at flash points of insecurity in Nigeria.
The House observed that on Tuesday 25th July, 2023, the Abia State command of the Nigerian Police, confirmed that two of its personnel were attacked and killed while on the convoy of the State Commissioner for Trade, Commerce and Industry, Dr Chimezie Ukaegbu. The attack which occurred about 4pm near SAMEC in the Ariaria axis of the Aba Metropolis, while the Commissioner was conducting a familiarization tour of the markets in Aba.
Meanwhile, the House also observed that in addition to the loss of lives of the two policemen involved, the assailants also set ablaze a vehicle
belonging to Abia State Ministry of Trade, Commerce and Industry, expressing worry that as an aftermath of the cowardly killing of the two police officers on the 25th of July, 2023, terror was unleashed on innocent residents of Aba by security operatives such as the Police and Army in the Aba metropolis, resulting to the total shut down of the major markets in the area.
It called on the Inspector General of Police and Chief of Army staff to urgently intervene, by calling their men to order, as the continued attack by their officers on innocent residents and passers-by, could degenerate into full blown riot and unnecessary breakdown of law and order.
The House, however, resolved and urged the Inspector General of Police through the State Commissioner of Police to provide increased and adequate security,as well as, man power for government officials and infrastructure in flash points in Nigeria, urged the Inspector General of Police and Chief of Army Staff to call their men to order and adopt better Police/Army civil relationship with their host communities.
Furthermore, the House urged the police to set up a high powered investigative team to bring those behind the senseless attack to book, insisting that the security apparatus of government should do everything to return peace and security of lives and
property of residents in Aba.
