The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has launched a new Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) as part of renewed efforts to combat violent crimes and improve public safety across Abuja and its surrounding communities.

The unit was officially inaugurated on June 8, 2026, at the former SARS facility located at Guzape Junction, Abuja, by the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi.
The launch ceremony attracted senior security officials, traditional rulers, community leaders, and representatives of various security agencies, including the military, the Nigerian Immigration Service, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
Addressing attendees, CP Sanusi said the creation of the VCRU aligns with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to strengthen proactive policing and tackle emerging security threats such as armed robbery, kidnapping, violent attacks, and organized criminal activities.

According to the police commissioner, the unit has been divided into five operational sectors strategically positioned across the FCT to enhance intelligence gathering, improve response times, and ensure effective deployment of security personnel and resources.
He noted that officers assigned to the VCRU underwent a rigorous screening and training process and charged them to uphold professionalism, discipline, accountability, and respect for human rights while carrying out their duties.

CP Sanusi warned that acts of misconduct, harassment, extortion, abuse of authority, and other unethical practices would not be tolerated, stressing that officers found culpable would face appropriate sanctions.
The commissioner also appealed to residents to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information, emphasizing that lasting security can only be achieved through cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the public.
The FCT Police Command urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities through the nearest police station or the Command’s emergency lines.
The launch of the VCRU marks another step in ongoing efforts to strengthen security architecture and enhance crime-fighting capabilities within Nigeria’s capital territory.
