The Government has called on public servants to make better use of official working hours and contribute more effectively towards building a productive, disciplined, and result-oriented Public Service. The call is part of ongoing efforts to improve efficiency, accountability, and service delivery across government institutions.
The Head of Service, Benson Ojeikere, made the appeal during an interactive mentorship session organised to strengthen accountability and improve performance within the Public Service. The session brought together workers and senior officials to discuss ways of improving commitment, transparency, and professionalism in government offices.
Speaking during the programme, Ojeikere urged workers to show greater dedication and seriousness in carrying out their duties. He explained that public servants play an important role in the development of society and must therefore discharge their responsibilities with honesty, discipline, and commitment.
According to him, government workers are expected to use official working hours effectively and avoid actions that may slow down productivity. He stressed that punctuality, teamwork, and respect for official procedures are necessary for the smooth running of the Service.
The Head of Service also reminded workers about the mandatory submission of daily reports, weekly work plans, and self-appraisals. He described these measures as important tools for monitoring performance, improving efficiency, and ensuring accountability in Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.
He explained that regular reports would help supervisors monitor the progress of work, identify areas that require improvement, and encourage workers to remain focused on their assignments. He added that the reporting system would also help management evaluate the performance of officers fairly and effectively.
Ojeikere further stated that the measures were introduced not only to improve productivity but also to address indolence and eliminate the activities of ghost workers within the system. He noted that the government is committed to promoting a culture of hard work, responsibility, and transparency in the Public Service.
He warned that workers who fail to comply with established Service procedures and reporting obligations would face disciplinary actions. According to him, the administration remains determined to restore discipline, maintain high standards, and ensure that public servants perform their duties in line with laid-down rules and regulations.
The Head of Service also stressed the importance of integrity, fairness, and professionalism in official conduct. He cautioned workers against favoritism, negligence, corruption, and undue influence, noting that such practices could damage the image and credibility of the Public Service.
Ojeikere encouraged public servants to remain committed to ethical standards and continue supporting government efforts aimed at improving governance and service delivery. He added that a disciplined and efficient Public Service is essential for building public trust and achieving meaningful development in the state.
