The Abia State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has held a meeting with key education stakeholders to discuss how to improve digital learning and update the school curriculum across the state. The meeting took place at the Secondary Education Management Board (SEMB) Conference Hall. It brought together Education Officers, Zonal Quality Evaluators, and Area Quality Evaluators under the Abia Fostering Innovation and Reform for School Team (AbiaFIRST).
The purpose of the meeting was to share ideas on how schools in Abia State can improve teaching and learning using modern tools and better methods. The participants also discussed how to make the education system more effective and suitable for today’s needs.
The Honourable Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Elder Goodluck Chinedu Ubochi, expressed happiness over the strong turnout of participants despite the short notice given. He praised the officers for their commitment and for supporting the efforts of Governor Alex Chioma Otti to improve education in the state.
He also encouraged everyone present to take the opportunity provided by the Education Reform and Innovation Team (ERIT) very seriously. According to him, the programme is meant to help education officers do their work better and improve the quality of teaching in schools. He said that when officers show dedication, it will help build a stronger education system for students.
The Commissioner further explained that the goal of the reform is to create a better learning environment where students can receive quality education that meets modern standards. He noted that education must continue to change and improve in order to prepare children for the future.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Uchechukwu Kalu, also spoke at the meeting. She thanked the Zonal Inspectors of Education (ZIE) and Area Inspectors of Education (AIE) for attending the programme. She stressed the importance of working together as a team to ensure that the reforms are successful.
She added that continuous training and development of education officers are very important. According to her, when staff are well trained, they can perform better and support schools more effectively. She encouraged everyone to stay committed to the reform process.
The Team Leader of ERIT, Mr. Chris Ogah, explained that the programme is a practical training designed to improve how children learn, communicate, and are assessed in schools. He said the training focuses on real classroom situations that help teachers and education officers understand how to improve learning outcomes.
He also emphasized the need to use proper methods and data to guide decision-making in the education system. According to him, this will help improve performance and ensure that every child has access to quality education.
He further noted that the success of the programme depends on how well the participants apply what they have learned. He encouraged them to take the training seriously and put it into practice in their various schools and districts.
Speaking on behalf of the participants, Mrs. Edward Chinonyerem, Area Inspector of Education, Obingwa 1, expressed appreciation to Governor Alex Chioma Otti for giving education officers the opportunity to take part in the ERIT programme. She said the initiative would help improve teaching and learning across Abia State.
She added that the knowledge gained from the meeting would be useful in strengthening education delivery and ensuring better outcomes for children.
