The Abia State Government has declared zero tolerance for absenteeism in the Civil Service, warning that officers who stay away from work without approval, as well as their superiors who shield or protect them, will face disciplinary action.
The Head of Service, Mr. Benson Ojeikere, gave the warning during a meeting with the Body of Permanent Secretaries, convened to reposition the State Civil Service for improved performance, discipline and accountability.
Ojeikere said the era of protecting indolent and absent officers was over, stressing that absenteeism and other acts of indiscipline negatively affect productivity and weaken the effectiveness of the Civil Service.
He charged the Permanent Secretaries to support and drive the implementation of the ongoing reforms and policies of the State Government. He also urged them to ensure that both they and their staff are familiar with the Public Service Rules and Regulations and understand the consequences of violating them.
According to the Head of Service, Permanent Secretaries must provide effective leadership and develop the capacity to achieve results despite the challenges they may face in the course of their duties.
He further urged them to promote a healthy work environment built on mutual respect, professionalism and teamwork, while protecting and upholding the integrity and good reputation of the Abia State Civil Service.
Ojeikere also advised the Permanent Secretaries to maintain cordial and professional relationships with their respective bosses and colleagues, while demonstrating responsibility, commitment and good leadership in the discharge of their duties.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Abia State Government to improving the welfare of civil servants, noting, however, that government’s efforts must be reciprocated with diligence, discipline, productivity and total dedication to duty.
The Head of Service stressed that the ongoing reforms in the Civil Service are aimed at building a more efficient, disciplined and result-oriented workforce that will contribute effectively to the development of Abia State.
He therefore called on all civil servants to take their duties seriously and support the efforts of the government to build a professional Civil Service that meets the expectations of the people of the state.
