The Permanent Secretary, Office of the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Godwin Okezuo, has described human resource mapping as a critical tool for determining the actual workforce within the civil service system.
Dr. Okezuo made this known while receiving members of the Abia State Chapter of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM), who paid him a courtesy visit in his office.
He explained that human resource mapping helps to clearly identify the roles and responsibilities of workers within the civil service, thereby promoting efficiency, accountability, and improved service delivery.
According to him, a robust human resource system remains essential for government to effectively implement its policies and programmes. He added that the state government has continued to strengthen the capacity of civil servants through regular training programmes, conferences, and other developmental initiatives.
Dr. Okezuo further disclosed that the government, through the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, is currently training female civil servants in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to enhance their digital competence and productivity.
He also noted that laptops have been distributed to government appointees, permanent secretaries, and selected directors in the state to improve efficiency in official duties.
The Permanent Secretary commended the institute for the visit and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to workforce development and the modernization of the public service.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management, Abia State Branch, Elder Chiemela Adiele Ulelu, said the visit was to inform the Office of the Secretary to the State Government about this year’s celebration of International Human Resources Day, with the theme “Empower People to Lead Change.”
Ulelu noted that both the public and private sectors in Abia are populated with capable individuals who can deliver meaningful results when provided with the right systems and opportunities.
He also commended Governor Dr. Alex Otti for professionalizing human resource management in the Abia public service, while appreciating the Chairman of the Civil Service Commission, Pastor Eno Jerry Eze, and the Head of Service, Mr. Benson Ojeikere, for their continued support and partnership.
The highlight of the visit was the presentation of the institute’s magazine to the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Godwin Okezuo.
