Deputy Governor Leads Peace Move Over Utuka Land Dispute

The Deputy Governor of Abia State and Chairman of the State Boundary Committee, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, has reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to restoring lasting peace between the Amabiaelu Autonomous Community, Umuhuezchi, and the Ohumala/Amoji Autonomous Community, Igbere, in Bende Local Government Area over the long-standing Utuka land dispute.

Speaking at a conciliatory meeting held at the Office of the Deputy Governor, Government House, Umuahia, Engr. Emetu said the administration remains committed to promoting peaceful coexistence, security, and unity among communities in the state.

He noted that the dispute, which dates back to the 1950s and has gone through several court processes up to the Supreme Court, has continued to generate tension between the neighbouring communities.

While stressing respect for court judgments, the Deputy Governor explained that the Boundary Committee serves as a peace-building platform rather than an appellate body, aimed at reducing tension and preventing further conflict.

He warned that no land dispute is worth human life and urged stakeholders to embrace dialogue, reconciliation, and mutual understanding, adding that the government would not tolerate any action capable of threatening public peace.

The Mayor of Bende Local Government Area, Deacon Bassey Uwabunkonye, described the communities as brothers and expressed concern over recurring security challenges linked to the dispute. He commended the Deputy Governor for convening the meeting and pledged continued support for peace efforts.

Also speaking, the President General of Ohumola/Amoji Autonomous Community, Igbere, Chief Obike Imo Mascot, called for government intervention in the demarcation of the disputed land and erection of boundary pillars to ensure lasting peace. He thanked the state government for its prompt response to the matter.

The Traditional Ruler of Umuhu Ezechi, His Royal Majesty Eze Chigaemeze Onwuchekwa, also welcomed the intervention and called for fairness and justice in resolving the dispute.
