Abia Kicks Off Second Phase of Teachers Recruitment Screening

The Abia State Government has commenced the Computer-Based Test (CBT) screening for the second batch of its teachers’ recruitment exercise across designated centres in the state.

At the Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba centre, candidates arrived in large numbers as early as 7:30 a.m., awaiting accreditation and the commencement of the examination.

Speaking to journalists, the Executive Chairman of the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), Mrs. Lydia Onuoha, who coordinated activities at the centre, said her role was to monitor the process and ensure that only duly registered applicants participated in the screening.

She acknowledged operational challenges, including intermittent power outages and difficulties in verifying candidates whose application photographs were unclear. Despite these issues, some candidates had already begun writing the examination at the time of filing this report.

One of the applicants, Miss Precious Akuoma, expressed optimism about her chances, saying she was confident she performed well.

Also speaking, the Director of Information and Communication Technology at Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Mr. Kalu Nnaemeka Okoro, briefed the press on the progress of the exercise. He apologized for technical disruptions related to electricity supply but assured that all eligible candidates would be given the opportunity to complete their tests.

Mr. Okoro added that there were no reported issues involving the examination consultants, led by Mr. Yerima Omosun.

Another candidate, Mrs. Akwada Chinaza Victoria, who had just completed her test, expressed satisfaction with the process despite the initial delays.

“As a degree holder, I was tested in English, Mathematics, and French, which is my area of specialization,” she said. “There were some challenges, mainly power fluctuations and delays in starting the examination, but I thank God I was able to complete it successfully and scored 81.”

She commended the state government for prioritizing education and recruiting additional teachers for public schools.

According to officials, 24,023 applicants were shortlisted for the second batch of the recruitment exercise, compared to 9,371 shortlisted in the previous phase. The state plans to employ about 4,000 teachers, particularly for schools in rural areas. At the time of filing this report, approximately 750 candidates were already seated for assessment.

The CBT forms part of a statewide selection process aimed at recruiting qualified teachers. Candidates are being assessed at four designated centres across Abia State:
