The Abia State Government has restated its commitment to keeping the environment clean and improving waste management. This follows the donation of six 240-litre industrial waste bins by Rotary International District 9142.
Receiving the bins on behalf of the government, the Head of Service, Mr. Benson Ojeikere, said the donation came at the right time and supports the government’s environmental plans.
He was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Mr. Ikechukwu Oriuwa, who thanked Rotary International for the kind gesture. He said the donation supports the efforts of Governor Alex Otti to improve sanitation across the state.
He also explained that programmes like the monthly sanitation exercise and stricter enforcement are meant to encourage residents to dispose of waste properly.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Transport, Rotarian Chimezie Ukaegbu, said the government is ready to work with individuals and organisations that want to bring positive change.
While presenting the bins, the District Governor of Rotary International District 9142, Rotarian Kelechi Anyanwu, said the donation is part of efforts to support the government in keeping the environment clean and healthy, as well as improving work conditions in the civil service.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Club’s Service Project Committee, Rotarian Grace Okoro, highlighted the importance of working together to achieve lasting environmental goals. She said the project shows a shared commitment to better waste management, improved public health, and sustainable development.
