Press Freedom Day: Minister Lauds Journalists, Urges Ethical Reporting

The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has praised Nigerian journalists for their contributions to peacebuilding, democratic governance, and social development.

In a statement issued on Sunday to mark World Press Freedom Day, the minister described the media as indispensable partners in promoting the rights of women, children, and vulnerable groups, as well as in the fight against gender-based violence.

World Press Freedom Day, observed annually on May 3 and established by UNESCO, seeks to promote press freedom and assess the state of media independence globally. The 2026 theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace,” underscores the role of journalism in fostering accountability, inclusion, and social cohesion.

Sulaiman-Ibrahim noted that the ministry’s programmes are aligned with the theme, particularly in strengthening family systems, advancing inclusion, and expanding access to social protection services.

She further linked these efforts to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises social investment and support for vulnerable populations.

The minister added that the designation of 2026 as the Year of Families and Social Development would help drive reforms and deepen partnerships across the sector.

While commending the media, she urged journalists to maintain professionalism and uphold ethical standards, stressing that responsible journalism remains vital in bridging the gap between government and the public.
