OVOM STREET, ABA: FROM VALLEY TO PLAIN GOVERNOR OTTI’S RESCUE

On 25th February 2026, the Executive Governor of Abia State, His Excellency Alex Otti, officially commissioned another major project completed in record time in Aba, the commercial centre of Abia State. The project marked the successful restoration of Ovom Street, an area that had suffered serious environmental damage less than two years ago.

Not long ago, Ovom Street was badly affected by severe gully erosion. The erosion turned the once-busy road into a deep and dangerous valley. Buildings were swallowed, businesses were destroyed, and many families were forced to leave their homes. The disaster cut residents off from other parts of the city and disrupted daily life. A community that was once full of energy and business activities became a symbol of loss and despair.

For many residents, hope seemed lost. Some people felt that abandoning the area was the only option. Families who had spent their entire lives building homes and businesses watched helplessly as their properties were damaged by the natural disaster. It was a painful and traumatic experience. At that time, the problem looked too big to solve.

During the 2023 election campaign, Governor Alex Otti promised the people of Abia State that they would “weep no more” because help was on the way. After taking office on May 29, 2023, he immediately began tackling the many challenges facing the state. The erosion crisis at Ovom Street was treated as an urgent matter that required quick government intervention.

As soon as he was informed about the extent of the damage, the Governor personally visited the site to see things for himself. After assessing the situation, he chose to act immediately. Rather than wait for the Federal Government’s ecological fund, he decided to move forward without delay. His priority was the safety and welfare of the people.

He directed the General Manager of the Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA), Arc. Henry Ukeje, to immediately evacuate residents from the danger zone and provide temporary accommodation for affected families. He also ordered that experienced and qualified contractors be engaged to handle the reconstruction of the road and the stabilization of the surrounding environment to prevent future erosion.

Work began quickly. Governor Otti did not only give instructions; he closely supervised and inspected the project to ensure that it met high standards. He made it clear that quality would not be compromised. According to him, any project worth doing must be done properly and professionally.

Today, Ovom Street stands as proof that effective leadership can bring real change. The area that was once a deep erosion valley has now been restored to stable and motorable plain land. The road has been rebuilt, drainage systems have been improved, and the environment has been strengthened against further erosion.

The transformation has brought new life to the community. Families have returned to their homes. Business activities are gradually picking up again. Vehicles can now move freely, and residents can travel safely. What was once a place of fear and silence is now filled with movement, hope, and renewed confidence.

Indeed, help has come  and it came swiftly.

For the people of Ovom Street in Aba, this project is more than just a road. It is a symbol of restoration, renewed hope, and people-focused leadership in action.
