The final of the 32nd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations takes place tonight between the Teranga Lions of Senegal and the Desert Foxes of Algeria at the Cairo International Stadium.
Senegal are gunning for their first AFCON title despite reaching the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup in 2002, the year they reached their first AFCON final and lost on penalties to the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon. Their head coach Aliou Cisse missed his penalty kick in that final.
Algeria have played in the final twice against the Super Eagles of Nigeria in both occasions. In 1980 they lost to Nigeria 3-0 while in 1990 as hosts the Desert Foxes defeated the Super Eagles by a lone goal.
To qualify for the final, Algeria eliminated Nigeria 2-1 while Senegal saw off Tunisia through an extra time own goal.
When both sides met at the group stages the North Africans emerged victorious by a lone goal.
This match will rekindle the rivalry between two English Premier League stars; Sadio Mane of Liverpool and Riyad Mahrez of Algeria.
While Mahrez won the EPL with his Manchester City teammates, Mane and his Liverpool buddies did not walk alone as they clinched the prestigious UEFA Champions League.
